Jackson Browne Returns
to Highland Park

by Eddie Rivera

Lummis Day Founder and creator Eliot Sekuler was quietly flabbergasted when he heard the question.

At KPFK-FM Studios to tape interviews for the June 1 Lummis Day Festival event at Sycamore Grove in Highland Park, Sekuler found himself being playfully questioned by 2004 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee Jackson Browne in a studio hallway.

“He said, ‘How come you guys never asked me?,’ and my jaw just dropped,” Sekuler recalled.

Sekuler explained that the then two-year-old committee could never have imagined that an artist of Browne’s stature would be obtainable, let alone interested. But Browne, is not just any artist. He grew up in Highland Park, the son of a musician, in a home his grandfather Clyde Browne built, on the banks of the Arroyo Seco River.

The MONOLATORS
Are
ROCKING
Highland Park

By Desiree Garcia

Photos by Joel Monroy

It’s a cool night behind Zeppelins music shop on York Boulevard. The Highland Park Music Festival has finally reached its last band. When I look around I notice how many people there are. Its quickly gone from a few people to a big crowd.  I find Margot and Luke of Box Violet. I can also see Members of Fol Chen, Downtown/Union, Ghost Machinists and Seasons and they are just a few of the  people scattered in the front. Everyone is eagerly waiting for the same thing.  We are all waiting for the Monolators.

The first drum beats kick off the set with “Strawberry Roan“ and I instantly go from being tired and kind of burnt out to wanting to jump up and down and start a pit. A few members of the crowd beat me to it.
